Our Tonasket High School Story

Our Tonasket High School Story

Greetings from Tonasket High School. I can’t believe that we are almost done with our school year. It’s important to think about all of the great things our kids are doing at Tonasket High School. At the beginning of our school year, Mrs. Stangland spoke to the Tonasket staff and inspired us to make our year great. The theme for this school year is, “2016-17 and your story begins…” We are a quarter away from being done with our school year and our kids have created incredible memories and stories that they will take with them after they graduate from High School. We can choose as a community that cares about our students how this chapter in our story ends.

Our wrestling team showed what hard work, determination and setting a goal can do for individuals and a team. Mr. Mitchell and the coaching staff with our outstanding wrestlers went to Tacoma and brought back the State Title in Wrestling for the first time for Tonasket. We had kids that won state titles in their weight divisions and others that placed. My wife and I enjoyed joining our community and parents that drove the long drive to Tacoma to see it happen. The support for our wrestlers and Mr. Mitchell is inspiring. It was great to be a Tiger in Tacoma.

Our girls and boy basketball teams made it into the postseason with our boy basketball team earning the opportunity to play in the State B tournament in Spokane. Making it to state in any of the many opportunities we provide for our students are fantastic. There are a lot of kids from other schools that have not had the chance to experience the feeling of making it to postseason play. Tonasket kids are doing it on a regular basis this year. Our kids are doing great things.

The Fall season in sports brought Tonasket student-athletes state placement in Cross Country. Our kids that participated in Girls Soccer, Football and Volleyball went to post season and represented us well. We had students that placed on the all-league teams and coaches that were named coach of the year.

Kids in Tonasket can be as involved as they want. They don’t have to be in sports to experience success. We had an FFA Parliamentary Procedure team placed nationally. FBLA has more kids going to State than they have in a long time. Robotics kids placed to qualify for State and beyond. Our Knowledge Bowl Team coached by Susan McCue did great this year and placed third in State. We have kids getting hands on experience in the community. Some students are taking classes to achieve their CNA license at the hospital and others are shadowing at the bus garage to learn about diesel mechanics. The list goes on and on. Tonasket is a great place to learn. We have great teachers and kids!

Some of the negative comments that I have read in the media from people, reference Tonasket School District in a negative way with a wide stroke. It’s not fair to the teachers and kids that are working hard every day and making our district a great place to learn and work. I think it’s important to remind everyone about the bigger picture. All of our kids deserve the best education that they can get. All of our kids and teachers and everyone else involved in the school need to finish this year’s story in a positive way. We have schedules to build, teachers to hire, curriculum to approve and graduate another successful class from Tonasket High School on June 3rd.

We can make this year’s story a good example of how adults can come together with differences and discuss options to make things right for all of our kids. We don’t all have to agree with the outcomes, but we do all still need to be able to work together in this community and support the great things our kids are doing. This 4th quarter of school can be a chapter in the story of how we came together as a school and community. We can be an example to our kids that we can disagree and be angry with each other, but we can come up with solutions, so we can move on and finish this school year on a positive note. We have a great community and school. If the fall and winter were any indication of what spring will bring, I’m confident we will see continued success in athletics and academics. It’s great to be a Tiger.

Sincerely,

Brian Ellis
